When Ryan and I started dating he lived in Lincoln Square where he was only a jump away from Garcia's Mexican Restaurant. He raved about Garcia's and I told him, "just wait until you eat at 'El Niagara' in Woodstock. It has the best Mexican dishes." We were both wrong! Yes, Garcia's was good after we had spent a long night in Wrigleyville drinking Old Style, but on a sober night? I think we could do better. We recently found Taxco on Elston Avenue; they also have a Montrose entrance and we're in love with this new place. Ryan and I have been there twice in one week and we haven't eaten a bad or even so-so dish yet. Everything from the small salads to the burritos taste great. The margaritas are something to write home fondly about and the staff friendly and attentive without being annoying. Everything was great, especially the beans! Oh, the glorious beans! Every Mexican restaurant I have ever been to serves refried beans that looks exactly like the stuff from a can you buy at Jewel, but not Taxco. Taxco's beans are freshly sorted, simmered, and seasoned pinto beans, refried slowly and mashed to a fabulous consistency that leaves some of the beans whole. A refried bean taste and consistency paradise! Yea! So, if you are ever in the Old Irving Park/Albany Park neighborhood, check out Taxco. A link to the location and restaurant is included below. Ask for Julisa; she's a waitress at Taxco and one of our neighbors. Enjoy!

I always though El Niagra in Woodstock was great. My Mexican friends from the McHenry Co Health Dept & I used to lunch there often. So, if Taxco is better, I'll make plans to try it too.
ReplyDeleteYou should come down to Pilsen if you want real Mexican cuisine.
ReplyDeleteFor those out West of Chicago or avoiding a drive into the city, there's one of these in Sycamore. It's where Amanda and I had our first date!
ReplyDeleteJoel- Invite us to a place in Pilsen and we'll be there! It's been a while since we've seen you.
